Abstract
Electronic government is a highly discussed and fashionable topic. In this paper E-gov is seen as a complex network of interactions between the government, citizens and business. Many challenges do appear for each country trying to go digital: political, social, economical and technological. Romania did start late and efforts were made only after starting negotiations towards accession with the European Union. An attempt to evaluate the current status and perspectives for electronic government does show: _ The communications infrastructure is very poor; _ The number of PCs/capita is very low; _ Few people have Internet access, the majority at low speed, and quite expensive; _ The government if offering basic electronic services mainly in stage one (posting information); _ The quality of governmental web-sites is low; _ Local government has a weak presence over the Net; _ The Information Systems of public administration have to be significantly improved. The perspectives are not very bright. Electronic government in Romania can be able, in the next few years, to cover the relations Government to Government and Government to Business, but it will take many years to be useful for the citizens.
