Abstract

In a world defined by car-centric planning, neighborhoods are becoming central units for transformation processes and urban regeneration. The neighborhood is analyzed as the unit of people-centered urban planning through urban development strategies, place governance, and spatial planning dimensions. This article reviews the literature and synthesizes existing theories and studies, highlighting trends and directions regarding contemporary urban development. The results consist of an overview of existing concepts and approaches, as well as a presentation of the types of analyses and indicators used at the neighborhood level, emphasizing the relationship between basic needs and the built environment necessary for people-centered spaces. This theoretical basis underpins the analytical framework for neighborhoods in car-centric cities, such as Los Angeles, and allows for the identification of approaches that address the car-centered planning model and functional segregation.
