Republica Moldova în paradigma statelor mici: provocări și perspective în materie de guvernanță

Cristina Haruța, Ana Maria Botnărescu

Abstract

The Republic of Moldova exemplifies a small state with limited external projection, functioning as a vulnerable ‘buffer’ between the spheres of influence of the US, Russia, and the EU. This geopolitical positioning constrains decision-making autonomy, necessitating a precarious balance between navigating divergent external interests and pursuing European integration. Grounded in small state theory, this article synthesizes theoretical analysis with empirical research to examine governance challenges in an unstable environment. Drawing on expert interviews, the study assesses political risks, strategic options, and institutional resilience, offering critical insights into the quality of governance in the Republic of Moldova.
